Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments analyzing the portrayals of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency an online platform to educate about the role of women in pop culture, is run by Sarkeesian. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she works on issues related to targeted harassment against women and other marginalized classes of online space. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's extremely sought-after and has given talks at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Sarkeesian was fascinated by the gender issue and feminist movements since an early age. When she was in 2009, she was still studying at university, Sarkeesian launched the website Feminist Frequency. Someone who was ambitious had a plan to make a web series to study how gender is represented in gaming. However, she found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. It didn't deter her from pursuing the project, and instead reinforced her commitment to be a feminist critic of media. For the many achievements she's made for feminism, she is the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency An educational non-profit that explores female representations of pop culture.
