Film critics generally praised the film as well as the performances by the entire cast that included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan. The film received nominations for the Academy Awards nine times and it was awarded two. Hanks played the role of Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated feature Toy Story (1995). In the same year, he made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) that chronicles the rise and fall of a popular 1960s group in addition to playing the part of a music producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel described his performance as "charming" and most people who reviewed the film agreed that Hanksperformance earned him a spot among the finest romantic comedy actors of his time.
